Charles Masala, P.Eng, Board Member and Founder
Charles is a water engineer working for AMEC, in Vancouver, BC. He received his B.Eng at University of Zambia. He did his graduate school at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne (UK), and University of British Columbia (Canada). Charles is an avid bicyclist and part of International ministry at First Baptist Church in Vancouver. He celebrates and enjoys health eating.
Brent Hoshizaki, Treasurer
Brent is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and is currently working in Vancouver, BC as a Senior Tax Manager at W.L. Dueck & Co. He has a B.A. in Communications from the University of Alberta, a CPA license with the Washington State Board of Accountancy (WSBOA), is a member of the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants (WSCPA) and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and is working towards his MBA. His excitement for Dwankhozi Hope came from the realization that God can use even a ‘bean-counter’ to further the work of His Kingdom. Brent and his wife, Janice, have a beautiful daughter. In Brent’s spare time he loves to cook 20-minute meals for his wife, Janice, play golf, run a few marathons for recreation, and play and watch hockey.
Matt MacLean, Executive Director
Matt is an Executive Search Consultant for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation located in Seattle, Washington. He is married to Beth MacLean, who is also involved in Dwankhozi. They have two young children and are also heavily involved in their local church, Bethany Presbyterian in Queen Anne. He was born and raised in Chicago and is a University of Illinois Alum. He has a passion for sports and is a diehard Chicago and Illini sports fan.
Kate Ballbach, Director of Marketing
Kate started her career in finance, but shifted her focus to marketing were her passion and talents laid. She worked as Director of Marketing for AT&T wireless for seven years, before hanging up her corporate hat to take on a bigger role – mom to three busy boys with full schedules of athletics, school and countless activities. She transitioned from donor to staff for Dwankhozi Hope after a recent trip to Zambia, and brings creative leadership to the team
Laurie Nelson, MIT, Director of Operations
Laurie holds a Masters in Teaching from Seattle University and a Bachelors of Arts in Education from Seattle Pacific University. Laurie started her career as a First Grade Teacher and spent time in South Africa teaching English, Art, and vocational classes. In recent years, her focus has been on raising her two children as well as volunteering her time with various educational and non-profit organizations. She worked for a time with the microfinance organization Opportunity International. She has also played an important leadership role in her church, Bethany Presbyterian.
Beth MacLean, RN, Director of Programs
Beth is a registered nurse and received her BSN from Wheaton College and Rush University in Illinois. She served as a nurse for eight years in the United States Army, resigning her commission as a Captain. She currently works in an orthopedic outpatient surgery center in Kirkland, Washington. She and her husband Matt have two children and love all things Seattle.
Sheri Campbell, Finance Team
Sheri holds a Masters in Business with emphasis in Microcredit and a B. A. in Religion/Theology – both from Seattle Pacific and is currently an International Fuel Tax Auditor for the WA Dept of Licensing. She has traveled to Costa Rica with World Vision and to South Africa with Christian Technical Support in support of microenterprise. She enjoys volunteering at the Union Gospel Mission Senior Center decorating tables for social events and providing small giveaways. When not working or volunteering for various organizations Sheri enjoys walking and has completed marathons together with Lisa.
Samantha C. Pak, Ph.D., Esq., Legal Team
Samantha is an IP Counsel at The Boeing Company. Samantha received her undergraduate and doctorate degrees from the University of Illinois, and her law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law. Samantha is admitted to practice in the State of Washington and is also admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. She is a member of the Washington State Bar Association, the Asian Bar Association of Washington, the Korean American Bar Association of Washington, and the Washington State Patent Law Association. In her spare time, she loves to hike, bike, cross-country ski, snowboard, travel, read, and spend time with her husband, Mike Kim, and their young daughter.
Janice Hoshizaki, Education Team
Janice is an elementary school teacher who has taught in Vancouver, BC and Olympia, WA. She is currently a part-time teacher-on-call and stay-at-home mom in Vancouver. The “high” she gets from participating in others’ learning makes her feel alive. She is involved with Dwankhozi Hope because she was inspired when friend, Charles Masala, Dwankhozi Hope Visionary and Director, told her about the teachers and students at Dwankhozi School. In her spare time, Janice likes to laugh and play with her husband and their daughter.
Mike Kim, MD., Medical Team
Mike is a Neurologist who specializes in Movement Disorders at the VA in Seattle; he has a newly-found interest in the global issue of AIDS, especially AIDS in Africa. Mike and his wife Samantha, recent transplants from the great city of Chicago, have a daughter and love the abundance of the wilderness, and the loving community Seattle has to offer.
Missy Lein, Medical Team
Missy is a pediatric nurse at Seattle Children’s Hospital. She grew up in the Pacific Northwest and loves most things native to this culture like kayaking on the Sound, hiking in the mountains, coffee, and even the rain! She joined Dwankhozi Hope after recently returning from a medical mission trip to Zambia with Global Health Outreach. It was there where God blessed her with knowing the joy of my passion for nursing and healthcare and His passion for healing all of who we are. Missy fell in love with the people and the country and looks forward to seeing what God has in store for His people through this ministry.
Crystal Olmsted, Communications Team
Crystal is a self-taught Graphic Designer and runs her own business, CAO Design in Tacoma, Washington. She not only provides graphic design/web design for a variety of clients, but also works for her husband as an office manager. She is currently on the Board of Directors for Pacific Gallery Artists in Tacoma, Washington and loves working on any art/design project she can get her hands on. Crystal and her husband have two sons, and are looking forward to the changes and challenges that the Lord has brought to their family unit.
Brad MacLean, PMP, Operations Team
Brad is a Sr. IT Project Manager at GE Capital in Scottsdale, Arizona. Like his older brother, Matt, he is a Chicago native and avid Chicago sports fan. Brad graduated with a major in MIS (Management Information Systems) from Lewis University in Chicago. He and his wife have a daughter, Kayla, who is the light of their life. Brad enjoys technology, helping others, playing with his daughter, reading, and exploring the outdoors.
Lisa Studeman, Finance Team
Lisa holds a B.S. in Accounting and is currently an Accountant at First Savings Bank Northwest. She is a member of Mars Hill Church and enjoys volunteering at the Union Gospel Mission Senior Center decorating tables for social events and providing small giveaways. When not working or volunteering for various organizations Lisa enjoys walking and has completed marathons together with Sheri.
Ron Baerg, Special Advisor
Ron is a principal at Arris Architecture in Vancouver, Canada. Ron has worked on a wide variety of architectural and community planning projects locally and abroad including an orphanage in Tanzania, Africa. He has had involvement in volunteer work through the church including International Student Ministries and Stephen Ministries (counseling). Ron currently lives in Vancouver with his wife, Julie, and son, Liam.
Solar Committee
This committee is made up of John Vlahavas, Jeff Chou, Andy Clark, Rakish Khana, and Chris Kenessey. All five are previous Dwankhozi donors who reside in Chicago. Their desire is to see solar lighting available not only to the Dwankhozi school building but also to the student and teacher homes and the community.
