Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t play basketball. Should I come?
YES! Come at 6:00pm for food truck, drinks, DJ and fun! Watch the tournament games and 3 point contest. Play “Pop A Shot” video games.

What is the level of play? How will you match up teams?
If you have dreams of this being the springboard for your pro basketball career, this may not be the tournament for you. Our goal is for everyone to have fun while supporting a great cause. We will do our best to ensure that we match teams that have similar skill levels. Depending on how many teams register, we may create multiple brackets (e.g. coed teams, under-18 teams, guy teams, gal teams, etc). This is our first Hoops for Hope event, so we ask for some grace as we figure it out!

What are the rules of the tournament play?
Games played are to 21, by ones and twos with a 15 minute time limit. There will not be referees at the event so we are putting extra emphasis on sportsmanship and fair play. Call your own fouls (no arguments, please). No free throws, the team will maintain possession. All games are half court.

We will post the bracket(s) the day before the tournament starts. Expect to play at least 2 games. We hope to have multiple brackets which would allow us to match co-ed teams and under 18 teams together – but that depends on our sign ups! All teams need to check in with the tournament staff 15 minutes before the start of their game. We have limited time, so it’s an automatic forfeit for any team that is late.

Can I play on two teams?
You can request to play on two teams. You must have at least 4 players on your primary team to potentially register a second team. Register your primary team and pay the entry fee. On the registration form, for each player that is interested in playing on a second team, click the box “I’d like to play on a second team if possible.” We will be in touch the week of the tournament with more details once we know how many teams have signed up. If we are able to get you on a second team, you will not pay an entry fee for the second team unƟl the day of the event.

Can I enter the tournament as a single person without a team?
YES! We will add you to a team so you can play.

Why does the team captain need What’s App?
Team Captains will be added to a What’s App text string with the tournament organizers. This will allow us to communicate any last minute updates but also send you reminders so you don’t miss your game!

Why are there different entry fees for kids and adults?
We wanted to make this event accessible to all including kids and teenagers. We did not want to make the entry fee so high that younger folks are discouraged from playing. We ask that young people invite their family and friends to come at 6 p.m. for the party, championship games and 3 point contest.

How will the 3 point contest work?
There will be a $10/per ticket raffle for the 3 point contest. We will draw until we get five adults and five under-18 participants. We will also “auction” off two additional spots in the three point contest after we draw the initial 10 participants – we are trying to raise more money for a great cause after all! Each shooter will have 90 seconds. Highest adult scorer and highest under-18 scorer wins a prize.

What do I get for the entry fee?
You get to play at least 2 tournament games. You get dinner, drinks, DJ music and lots of fun. And you get to support a great cause, Dwankhozi Hope. All the proceeds go to fund a dormitory for school-aged students in rural Zambia.
